Nevadans with disabilities achieving their dreams

Kerstin Law

Kerstin began her journey with Vocational Rehabilitation in May 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At intake, she held an associate’s degree and soon began pursuing her bachelor’s in graphic design at Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe, a school she chose to fit her learning style and career goals. With the support of her Vocational Rehabilitation counselor, she also participated in VR sponsored programs such as CRAVE Camp and Campus Connections, which helped her build confidence and career readiness.

After proudly earning her bachelor’s degree, Kerstin and her mother transitioned to independent housing in South Reno, marking a major step toward self-sufficiency. With her counselor’s guidance, she developed her professional skills and secured a three month internship with Facilitate Joy, an organization that supports individuals with autism and ADHD. VR provided transportation assistance, and by the end of the internship, her dedication and creativity led to a permanent part-time position.

Today, Kerstin continues to thrive at Facilitate Joy, contributing to meaningful design projects and even beginning work on her own original book. In May 2025, she received an offer for a second part-time job near her home, another milestone in her growing independence.

Kerstin shared that before working with Vocational Rehabilitation, she feared employment might be out of reach due to challenges associated with autism, particularly communication skills. Now, she proudly celebrates her success and steady employment. Her counselor describes her transformation as remarkable – from a hesitant student to a confident, capable young professional who continues to inspire others through her perseverance and creativity.
